Just when you thought you’d seen the last eye-catching mod for Capcom’s Resident Evil 2, another excellent offering arrives online: the properly creepy mod that swaps out the Tyrant (aka Mr X) and replaces him with Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
With It Chapter Two out in theaters, now is a great time to create content around Stephen King’s iconic horror baddie. And seeing as we’ve already seen Resident Evil 2 mods featuring everything from speedos to Thomas the Tank Engine, we probably should’ve seen this one coming.
Created by a YouTuber named Marcos RC, this Resident Evil 2 mod basically puts a Pennywise skin where the Tyrant should be. There’s also dialogue added, which sounds like it has been ripped from the films. This video, from a different YouTuber named Albert_Fn_Wesker, also throws in some creepy fairground music…
We’ve spoken before about what makes the Tyrant so scary, and he really is a compelling villainous presence in the Resident Evil 2 remake. He stalks you around the map at certain points in the game, despite the fact that you can’t kill him until the end, giving the player no option but to run away and try not to get killed. Whenever he pops up, panic mode sets in, especially if you haven’t saved the game in a while.

There’s also a sense in the movies that Bill Skarsgard’s killer clown is pretty much unstoppable until the final third of each story. Watching him follow the player around the Raccoon City police station, shrugging off bullets and giggling away as he tries to murder you… well, it’s scary stuff, isn’t it? A whole game of this would be ruddy terrifying.
The next game up in Capcom’s horror franchise will be the multiplayer offering Resident Evil: Project Resistance. That game is out in 2020.
