Marvel announced in January 2017 that it has signed a multi-year, multi-game deal with publisher Square Enix to develop titles based on the popular superhero universe. The first title in the works is Marvel’s Avengers.
According to Marvel, the game will feature a completely new and original story, and will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. The project will be jam-packed with characters, environments, and iconic moments that will thrill Marvelites.
It also looks like Marvel will continue the trend of hiring top-notch talent for games based on their most popular characters. “The Avengers project,” as it’s being referred to at the moment by Marvel, is being developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider), with help from Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex). Shaun Escayg, former Naughty Dog creative director, and Stephen Barry, a 27-year games vet from EA and Visceral Games, have also joined the project in leadership roles at Crystal Dynamics.
That’s one hell of a team-up. Together, they’ll tell a story that involves The Avengers facing the consequences of a mission gone wrong that leads to the death of many. Up to four players will be able to team up online to experience an evolving game that will grow to include new heroes, new missions, and DLC that will be added to the base title at no extra cost.

Marvel’s Avengers Game Gameplay
We played the opening section of Marvel’s Avengers at Gamescom 2019. Here are our hands-on impressions of the gameplay!
Marvel’s Avengers Game Characters
Most of the main Avengers lineup you know and love from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is present in Marvel’s Avengers, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Hulk. Hank Pym’s Ant-Man will also make an appearance in the game. Strangely missing is Hawkeye, who hasn’t appeared in any of the promotional materials as of yet.
One new hero who will appear in the game is Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel! We got to play a few minutes of Ms. Marvel gameplay at NYCC 2019 and EGX 2019, and you can read our hands-on impressions of the hero here!
In terms of villains, evil organization AIM takes centerstage in a world that no longer wants the Avengers around. Expect to also see major Avengers foe Taskmaster, who is the mastermind behind the attack on San Francisco that we see in the trailers. Hulk will also get a chance to face off against The Abomination at some point in the game.
