Joshua Williamson’s The Flash is all coming to a head, 80+ issues in, and DC announced another big milestone for the Scarlet Speedster coming up in his run. This one is the celebration of 750 issues of Flash comics, coming in February.
The Flash #750 launches a new story arc in Williamson’s run: “The Flash Age.” Williamson pens the arc, with art on the big issue from Rafa Sandoval and Jordi Tarragona. With the Speed Force wrecking everything about Barry’s life, a new villain runs onto the stage: Paradox. In his quest to wreck The Flash’s existence, Paradox hits Barry with Paradox’s herald, Godspeed.
Like the other big anniversary issues DC’s been publishing lately, this one is oversized with a collection of all star artists drawing variant covers to show the character through the decades. Nicola Scott (Wonder Woman) draws the 1940s variant; Gary Frank (Doomsday Clock) will handle the 50s cover; Nick Derington (the Eisner-nominated cover artist of Mister Miracle) does the 60s variant; Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (artist of the mythical DC Comics Style Guide that was the foundation text for so many interpretations of the entire DCU for a decade) draws the 70s variant; Gabriele Dell’Otto (the amazing Annihilation covers at Marvel) will presumably paint the 80s variant; Francesco Mattina (a terrific cover artist who’s done a boatload of variants for DC in the last few years) is drawing the 90s variant; Jim Lee and Scott Williams (I don’t really need reference here, right?) handle the 2000s variant; and Francis Manapul, the artist and co-writer of the vastly underrated New 52 run of The Flash will draw the 2010s variant.
“The Flash is one of my favorite DC characters,” Williamson said, “so it’s an honor to work on The Flash #750 with so many returning Flash legends! It’s a showcase of awesome talent, each telling a story that celebrates what we love about the Flash and the Flash family. And what a perfect place to kick off our next epic storyline “The Flash Age!” 2020 is going to be a big year for The Flash. It all starts in this massive issue.”

Williamson has been tweaking the mythology of the Flash for most of his entire run, but kicked it into high gear around issue #50’s “Flash War” storyline. But the inclusion of Godspeed in this, which feels like a climax arc a little, shows that he’s been laying seeds for this back to the moment he came on the book. And with Godspeed and Bloodwork making the transition out of the comics and onto television, it’s hard to argue against the idea that Williamson has become one of the most influential writers to work on Barry Allen in the character’s entire history. It’s a solid run and a worthy title for the writer.
