Remedy, the studio behind games such as Alan Wake, Max Payne, and Control, has confirmed that they are working on three new projects, one of which is described as a live service game.
We already know that the first game is a single-player campaign for CrossFireX. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, don’t be surprised. The original Crossfire was an incredibly popular title in parts of Asia, but it never really made much of an impact in the West. The hope is that CrossFireX will be more of a global sensation when it debuts on Xbox One in 2020, and developer Smilegate Entertainment is certainly smart to have reached out to Remedy for assistance with the single-player portion of the game. We’re excited to see what they come up with for a title that is slightly outside their traditional “comfort zone.”
The live service game that Remedy references is known as Vanguard. It’s an intriguing project that Remedy says will be the brainchild of a small team working within the studio with a kind of start-up mentality. The team’s goal is to “make groundbreaking video games that uphold the Remedy Entertainment name” while building “new types of ongoing live multiplayer game experiences.”
It’s hardly a surprise that Remedy is interested in breaking into the live service arena given how lucrative such games can be over the long-term. However, there are those who are hesitant to be truly excited about such a game given the baggage that sometimes comes with such games and the fact there are only so many studios out there that make the quality of single-player titles that Remedy does. We’ll wait and see how that plays out.

The third title is the most mysterious but arguably the most interesting. Remedy describes it only as a new title using one of the studio’s “own brands.” While that wording has people hoping yet again for another Alan Wake title, it really could mean anything. We could even get a sequel to Control, which, by the way, will soon benefit from some DLC that seems to be teasing Alan Wake-related stories. It’s just as likely, though, that it will be an original Remedy idea, which we’re also in full support of.
Remedy has long been one of the best exciting names in game development and we look forward to playing whatever it is they come up with next. If that happens to finally be a sequel to Alan Wake, then hey, so much the better…
