Developer Platinum Games has revealed a new title called Project G.G. which will be the studio’s first self-published game.
“Unlike any of the games we’ve made so far, it’s going to be a 100 percent Platinum Games title,” says director Hideki Kamiya via a press release. “For everything from its setting and characters, to its game design and story, to how it’s promoted–Platinum Games is in full control.”
Kamiya expands on the significance of the studio being able to publish their own project by explaining why that arrangement is important to him as a creator.
“As a creator, it’s hard not to think of my games as my children,” says Kamiya. “After all, it takes a lot of hard work to raise them up, and a lot of love, too. However, once they’re done, any choices about them are entirely out of my hands. So, for example, no matter how many times people tell me, ‘You should make a sequel to this game,’ or, ‘I’d love to see it on that console,’ there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Before we dive further into that, let’s talk about the game itself. There’s quite honestly not much to go on at this time, but between the official statements and the trailer, we get the impression that Project G.G. will focus on battles between giant creatures (seemingly monsters and mechs). Some are already comparing what we’ve seen of the game so far to Ultraman, which we have to say is a comparison that we just can’t shake.
Still, the fact that Platinum Games is self-publishing this title is clearly the big story at the moment. There are obvious benefits to self-publishing in terms of creative control and potential returns, but in the case of Platinum Games, you really get the feeling that some of their statements could partially be based on what happened with Scalebound. While Microsoft and Platinum have suggested that the Scalebound split was amicable, incidents like that make it that much easier to see how Platinum feels that having total control over the creative and distribution process may allow them to simply focus on what they do best.
Sadly, there is no release date available for Project G.G. at the moment and we don’t know what platforms it will be available on. We’ll update you as soon as we have that information.
