This article contains WandaVision spoilers.
After nine episodes, WandaVision has wrapped up with a tremendous series finale episode. Agatha Harkness and Tyler Hayward’s plans have been foiled. Vision has ceased to exist in one sense, while a version of him continues to exist in another sense. Westview is freed, all except for one doomed citizen. Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, has moved on to find out what she truly is.
Then, as we’re tipped off by the lack of Disney+ asking us if we want to watch Avengers: Age of Ultron next, we get two different post-credits scenes. Each one is setup for an upcoming MCU movie sequel.
THE MID-CREDITS SCENE AND CAPTAIN MARVEL 2
Jimmy Woo gets his moment of authority by taking control of the post-Wanda situation in Westview. This leads to an interesting question of what will become of Agatha. Wanda intended for her to be trapped in her Agnes persona, doomed to be the resident nosey neighbor of Westview, but her antics should be fairly well known to the authorities and presumably the folks in town. I have to imagine she would end up arrested, despite what Wanda had planned for her.
Regardless, Director Hayward is arrested. If anything, it’s his treatment of Woo that will get him in trouble, though opening fire on two children and another SWORD agent in Monica won’t do him any favors. To be fair, had he taken out Wanda, there would not have been any bodies left for Billy and Tommy for anyone to investigate.
As Jimmy Woo and Monica Rambeau discuss the situation, another agent appears to debrief Monica. The two walk into the Coronet Theater with Monica unaware of what’s going on.
The agent reveals herself as a Skrull as sent by a friend of Monica’s late mother Maria Rambeau. This jibes with a running theory that the SWORD agents loyal to Monica over Hayward were likely Skrulls as well. As explained earlier in WandaVision, Maria founded SWORD after the events of Captain Marvel, where Carol Danvers started her mission to find the Skrulls a new home planet. It’s only natural that at least a few of the SWORD agents in the midst would secretly be alien shapeshifters.
The friend of her mothers that the Skrull talks about is none other than Nick Fury. Fittingly, Iron Man, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, featured Fury showing up in the post-credits to recruit Tony Stark. Now it’s Monica being recruited at the end of the first Disney+ series, which should give you a pretty good idea of how important her character should be considered to the MCU going forward. Despite being grounded on Earth for her assignments, Fury wants to meet with Monica up in space.
As we know from the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which takes place shortly after WandaVision, Fury is currently hanging out in space with the Skrulls while Talos is filling in for him on Earth.
There are two projects coming up involving Nick Fury and the Skrulls. First off is Captain Marvel 2, which is currently slated for November 11, 2022. That movie will prominently feature not only Carol Danvers, but both Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, who will soon be the star of her own Ms. Marvel series on Disney+.
Then there’s the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. While filming is supposed to begin next month, it hasn’t been stated when the six-episode series is supposed to see the light of day.
THE POST-CREDITS SCENE AND DOCTOR STRANGE 2
We see that Wanda Maximoff now lives alone in a remote cabin home. At first, she appears to be living a normal, albeit lonely life as she prepares her tea while wearing normal clothes. The camera then zooms into another room to show another Wanda, wearing her full-on Scarlet Witch costume, intently reading the Darkhold with hands and eyes glowing. The pages turn on their own.
Wanda is suddenly distracted by the screams of Billy and Tommy. Wherever they are, they’re in peril and they need her. Whatever is happening, the Darkhold appears to be the answer.
Despite being filmed in Ireland, the area is most likely supposed to be Wundagore Mountain, the place where Wanda and Pietro grew up in the comics.
The setup here is for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although Strange will be showing up in Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17, 2021 for some multiversal shenanigans, he’s going to be following that up with his own sequel on March 25, 2022. Wanda has long been confirmed to be a major player in that.
The way Wanda is studying the Darkhold is very similar to Dr. Strange using his astral form to study various books while sleeping in his first solo movie. The trouble is, the Darkhold is not exactly the safest thing to have in your possession, let alone read. While everything Agatha says is suspect, she was very adamant that Wanda’s acceptance of being the mythical Scarlet Witch will have absolutely disastrous effects upon reality.
But there does seem to be some method to her madness. While Wanda was able to explain away what her resurrected Vision (aka “WandaVision”) was, we never got a full explanation to what Billy and Tommy were. Oh, sure, they were constructs of some sort and could not exist outside of the Hex, but Wanda understood that there was more to it. When saying their goodbyes, she thanked THEM for choosing HER to be their mother.
Were Wanda’s children the ones insisting she get pregnant? What are they, exactly? Where are they? In the comics, they were pieces of Mephisto’s soul, but they might be going in a different direction here. Were they pulled from different portions of the multiverse?
Either way, Wanda wants to find them and will allow whatever horrible side-effects from the Darkhold to be released in order to get her children back.
