While the Call of Duty franchise is relatively new to the world of crossovers (at least compared to other modern series), battle royale spin-off Warzone is quickly making up for that lost time. In fact, Call of Duty: Warzone‘s next major event features two of the biggest names the game could possibly feature: Godzilla and King Kong.
Recently, the official Call of Duty YouTube channel revealed that Warzone will host a crossover event with Godzilla and King Kong. The in-game celebration, dubbed “Operation Monarch,” will tie into the Godzilla vs. Kong movie. Granted, it’s been a year since that film was released, but better late than never. The teaser trailer for the crossover doesn’t show much beyond Godzilla and Kong gearing up for a fight on a remote island. However, the video promises the event will stomp into game servers on May 11th, just two weeks after the new Warzone Season 3 update, Classified Arms, starts on April 27th.
Even before Operation Monarch launches, players can expect quite a few changes to the Caldera map. According to the official Call of Duty website, a new location, the Dig Site, will pop up between the Ruins and Mines. There, gamers will find the unearthed remains of a long-dead relative of King Kong, as well as a Skullcrawler (those nasty, two-legged lizard-like creatures that premiered in Kong: Skull Island). Not only can players use these ancient bones as hiding spots, but they can also loot nearby abandoned tents for equipment and supply boxes. That’s not all, though. If players are vigilant, they will find cave paintings, as well as Monstervese Kong’s signature ax sticking out of the ground near the Resort. Good luck pulling it out, though.
For the most part, Activision and the Warzone team are keeping the secrets of Operation Monarch close to their chests. The event will start at 9 AM PT on May 11th and bring with it a new game mode. We have no idea what it will be, just that it is, in the website’s own words, “based on several classic experiences with a titan-sized twist.” Does this mean players will have to avoid the fatal footfalls of dueling kaiju while also fending off opposing gamers? Will players get to temporarily command Godzilla or King Kong and dominate the battlefield? Raven Software ain’t talking, but according to the game’s website, the aftermath of Operation Monarch will be felt for quite a while. Something is stirring underneath Caldera and won’t reveal itself until later in the season.
Much like Call of Duty Warzone’s crossover with Attack on Titan, Operation Monarch will also include unique cosmetic items. Players will be able to equip special Godzilla and King Kong-themed masks, ghillie suits, and weapon blueprints. While the announcement doesn’t discuss those cosmetics at length, if the previous Attack on Titan Levi and Armored Titan bundles are any indication, players might have to shell out 2,400 COD points, or around $20, for each kaiju-themed skin pack.
With any luck, Activision will release more information on Operation Monarch before the crossover event starts on May 11th. Are you excited about the crossover? What features do you hope are included? Let us know in the comments below.
