Horizon Zero Dawn Rumor Hints at PC Port

Kotaku reports that sources have informed them that arguably one of the PS4’s best exclusives, Horizon Zero Dawn, may soon be coming to PC.

The sources in question wish to remain anonymous, but Kotaku’s Jason Schreier identifies them as “three people familiar with Sony’s plans.” The information gathered from those sources seems to suggest Horizon Zero Dawn is set to be released on PC sometime in the relatively near future. It sounds like the port is expected to be released for both Steam and the Epic store, but it certainly doesn’t seem that those plans have been confirmed at this time.

This is a big deal for reasons other than the incredible quality Horizon Zero Dawn and the idea that PC gamers will soon be able to experience it on their preferred platform. See, Horizon was developed by Guerrilla Games who were purchased by Sony in 2005. As many of you probably know, Sony doesn’t typically let studios that they own release games on PC or any other platforms for that matter. Death Stranding is coming to PC, but Sony doesn’t actually own Kojima Productions and they’re not publishing the PC port of the title.

Actually, there’s one more twist to this story that makes it all that much more interesting. In 2019, Sony named Hermen Hulst as the new head of the company’s Worldwide Studios. Prior to accepting the position, Hulst was managing director and co-founder of Guerrilla Games.

What does this all mean? Well, as we noted, assuming that this report is true, the most obvious takeaway is that a great game is about to be more accessible than ever. However, it’s the implication that Sony could be interested in bringing some of their exclusives to PC that really has everyone interested. While you can play some notable PlayStation titles on PC via PlayStation Now, that’s an avenue that the PlayStation team has otherwise not really supported in the past.

With Microsoft bringing more and more modern “Xbox” titles to PC and Japan seemingly becoming more interested in PC gaming, though, it’s really not that unreasonable to suggest that the PlayStation team could eventually port some of their biggest titles to PC after a period of PlayStation exclusivity.
