We’re already all in for Freeform‘s Motherland: Fort Salem, a TV show set in an alternate world in which witches have been fighting for the United States for 300 years. The network has just ordered the speculative fiction show to series.
The first (and hopefully not only) season of Motherland: Fort Salem will be 10 episodes, with Eliot Laurence (Claws) acting as creator. (Um, they couldn’t find a witch to act as showrunner?) In this world, witches ended their notorious persecution by striking a deal with the U.S. government: if the persecutions stop, witches will serve as a U.S. military force. Here’s hoping the show deals with that particular theme critically.
According to Deadline: “In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons.”

Motherland: Fort Salem will follow three young women as they go from basic magical combat training to deployment (via THR): Raelle (Taylor Hickson, Deadly Class), “a reluctant recruit whose mother was killed in the line of duty”; Tally (Jessica Sutton, The Kissing Booth), a kind, strong-willed and curious witch who enlisted over her mother’s objections; and Scylla (played by Amalia Holm in the pilot, but being recast), “a playful yet dark and mischievous recruit who’s not what she appears to be.”
Demetria McKinney (Saints & Sinners) also stars in the role of Anacostia, “a drill sergeant whose chief concern is keeping the recruits alive through basic training.”
