“Dead Static Drive is Grand Theft Cthulhu”, reads the official description of the first trailer for an upcoming indie game called Dead Static Drive. And if that isn’t enough to grab your attention, we don’t know what is. Come on, it’s Grand Theft Auto but with creepy creatures in it!
Yep, this really is a game that allows you to steal cars, drive around having a laugh, AND battle some giant monsters. It’s one of those genre-melding combinations that you don’t know you need until you see it in action. And then you definitely know you need it.
“Dead Static Drive is a horror survival adventure,” adds the official product description on Steam. “You’re on the road. The world begins to fall apart in front of you. Your friendships will make every bit of difference as order collapses and the people you meet fight for their own survival.”
Intrigued? Fair enough. Let’s take a look at the trailer…

Den of Geek had some early hands-on time with Dead Static Drive at an ID @ Xbox event in London last year. We enjoyed the freewheeling feeling of cruising from town to town, picking up weapons and vehicles from each new location, and soaking up the cool retro visuals.
But then, of course, trouble’s never very far away. Giant Dune-like slugs are popping out of the floor regularly, and you’ll need to keep your wits about you to defeat or outrun them. You can also recruit NPCs to help you as you travel around and get into monstrous scrapes. It’s all good fun, and we look forward to playing more of it.
Developed by Fanclub, Dead Static Drive is due to launch on Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass and PC at some point in 2020. We’ll be sure to let you know when more trailers arrive and the exact release date is confirmed. Watch this space, folks.
