Lumberjanes, the smash hit all-ages comic created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson and Brooklyn Allen, is coming to streaming.
BOOM! Studios announced that HBO Max picked up the rights to the comic with a script-to-series order. Co-creator Stevenson, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, is attached as showrunner and executive producer.
The comic follows friends Ripley, Molly, April, Jo, and Mal, attendees of the Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. They discover that there’s more to their camp than meets the eye, and spend the rest of their summer discovering secrets about their camp, the area around it, and building he kind of durable, long-lasting friendships that come from solving life threatening mysteries together. Just like regular camp.
We kid, but Lumberjanes is genuinely terrific. It’s ceaselessly fun, whip smart, with almost universally great storytelling in the art. It is one of those gateway comics that you can give to almost any kid to hook them into the medium forever. It was an easy inclusion on our best comics of the decade list. The show has a lot to live up to, but the involvement of all of Lumberjanes creators, along with Stevenson’s track record, are cause for a lot of hope.
Watters, Ellis and Allen join Stevenson as Co-Executive Producers, along with BOOM! executives Ross Ritchie and Stephen Christy. Allen, Ellis, Watters and Stevenson were all nominated for a GLAAD Award for their work on the Lumberjanes comic, and they won two Eisners in 2015, when the series first debuted. Before taking on She-Ra, Stevenson also won acclaim for her other big comics work, Nimona, for which she picked up another Eisner nomination.
The comic was recently announced to be coming to a close with an oversized one-shot out in December: Lumberjanes: End of Summer #1, from Watters, Allen, Kat Leyh, and Kanesha C. Bryant. That final issue marks the end of a six year run for the series where it turned into a driver of BOOM!’s all ages line. “When we announced End of Summer, we knew it would be the conclusion of a journey full of friendship, wonder, and fun for the Lumberjanes and for those of us who have wandered into the forest alongside them,” said BOOM! Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer. “We’re so happy that so many readers, young and old, have found joy and adventure whenever they sat down to a new story with Jo, Mal, Ripley, April, Molly, and all the other beloved characters we’ve grown to love throughout the years.”
