Bill Murray has confirmed that he has a secret role in Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in a new interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Interviewer Patrick Heidmann revealed the unexpected news over on Twitter this week, and Murray’s comments were then translated for clarity.
“You know, I made a Marvel movie recently,” Murray let slip, having at least some idea of the bomb he was dropping by adding “I’m probably not allowed to tell you, but whatever.”
The Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters actor went on to confirm exactly which Marvel movie he’ll feature in by confirming its director: Ant-Man 3’s Peyton Reed, who happens to be a huge fan of his. Not only that, Murray also happens to be a fan of Reed’s by way of his beloved 2000 American teen cheerleading comedy, Bring It On, and the two eventually became friendly enough for this quick casting coup.
“Some people were pretty surprised why I decided on a project like this, of all things. But for me the situation was completely clear: I got to know the director, and really liked him. He was witty, humble, everything you want from a director. And with the cheerleader movie Bring It On, he had already made a film years ago which I think is damn good. So I agreed, even though as an actor I’m not normally interested in these huge comic book adaptations.”
Although it’s exciting for many Marvel fans to hear that Murray has joined the MCU, they shouldn’t hold their breath for any further appearances, as Murray didn’t seem overly thrilled by his experience on the project.
“Let’s put it this way: the director is a good guy, and now I’ve at least tried out what it’s like to shoot a Marvel movie,” he explained. “But I don’t think I need that experience a second time. And to come back to your previous question: I have mostly had a pretty good knack for avoiding the nasties of this industry. Fortunately, most good artists are also good people. At least that’s how I experience it with my friends.”
The news isn’t massively surprising to MCU ubergeeks who spend their time digging around for clues and leaks on Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbusters. Earlier in the month, Cosmic Circus picked up some info on Murray’s potential casting in Ant-Man 3, having noted that his photo double had already been selected.
It’s unclear if Murray will appear in person in the threequel, or whether we’ll just hear his voice. We’ll be waiting a long time to find out because Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania won’t be out until July 28, 2023 as part of the MCU’s Phase 4.
