A report by ESPN suggests that they have acquired leaked information regarding Overwatch 2.
ESPN claims to have secured a training document from Blizzard’s upcoming BlizzCon event which reveals some intriguing new details about the previously rumored Overwatch sequel. While ESPN doesn’t reveal how it secured these documents, it’s worth noting that many of the details included within them do match with some of the most popular rumors regarding the game that have been circulating for the last few months.
So what’s new in Overwatch 2? The biggest addition to the sequel will seemingly be an expanded PvE mode. As some of you may know, Overwatch has featured PvE content in the past as part of special events. However, it sounds like this expanded take on the series’ PvE concepts will essentially add a PvE campaign to the game. The rumor is that these PvE missions will support four players and that one of them will take place in Rio de Janeiro. Interestingly, it also sounds like Overwatch 2 will focus more on the franchise’s story and the universe. Blizzard previously revealed elements of the grander Overwatch narrative via character trailer and similar content, but it sounds like the story will be a much more obvious part of the main game this time around.
The other notable new feature in Overwatch 2 (at least according to the documents) is the addition of what appears to be a kind of leveling system for heroes that will eventually allow players to choose between multiple special abilities. It’s not clear if this leveling system will allow you to mix-and-match abilities or stick with the tier they are on, but an early screenshot of the rumored mechanic suggests that low-level abilities will not be immediately (replaced) by higher-level ones.

Additional rumors suggest the addition of a new mode called “Push” which will occur on a new Toronto map. It’s worth noting again that all of these rumors are just that until further notice.
Overwatch 2 (along with Diablo 4) seems to be the worst-kept secret going into BlizzCon 2019, but we still have quite a few questions about this sequel. Will it immediately replace Overwatch? Will anything (including cosmetics) carry-over from the main game? It’ll be interesting to see if Overwatch fans are ready for this or if the reaction is somewhat lukewarm such as we saw when Destiny 2 was revealed.
