Solar Opposites Season 3 Confirmed

No need to boot up the “Retrace-Your-Step-Alizer”, Solar Opposites is coming back.

Hulu has ordered Solar Opposites season 3, according to Variety. Solar Opposites season 2 had already previously been confirmed when Hulu confirmed the series for a two-season, 16 episode order. The first batch of those 16 episodes premiered with the eight-episode season 1 on May 8, 2020. Solar Opposites season 3 will consist of 12 episodes and does yet have a release date announced.

Created by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and writer Mike McMahan, Solar Opposites occupies a similar animated sci-fi comedy universe as its Morty-ian forefather. The show follows two aliens Korvo (Roiland) and Terry (Thomas Middleditch); their child-like “replicants” Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) and Jesse (Mary Mack), and of course: their Pupa (Sagan McMahan….and Liev Schreiber briefly).

The show follows these alien “Schlorpians” after they escape the destruction of their planet and begin new, charmingly mundane lives on Earth. Through season 1’s eight episodes, the aliens confront all manners of human and alien issues alike such as nanobots in the city’s water supply, “red Gooblers”, and gender politics. Though the show is similar in animation and concept to Rick and Morty, it adopts a more laidback style.

“The only thing I think it would share is that it’s really, really funny, but it’s a totally different tone,” McMahan told Den of Geek prior to the show’s premiere. “The tone of Solar Opposites is much more terrestrial, two aliens trying to make it on earth. They don’t go to other dimensions. They don’t even go to space. It’s all about the effects these aliens are causing on earth.”

With the Solar Opposites renewal, it is now clear that Hulu intends to beef up its animated offerings. In addition to Solar Opposites season 3, the Disney-owned streamer also announced Crossing Swords season 2. Hulu also still has two Marvel animated series in production with M.O.D.O.K. and Hit Monkey.

Indeed Variety notes that due to the coronavirus pandemic, many studios are beefing up their animation offerings as live-action material has become difficult to produce. Per an interview with Solar Opposites executive producer Josh Bycel, the show was able to wrap up production on season 1 amid the global COVID-19 outbreak and isn’t anticipating significant delays for season 2. It’s unclear when a third season of Solar Opposites would be able to arrive but stay tuned for news.
